As other people have said, will fit into a film canister which is awesome. The small bag it comes with is nice too. It keeps it very quite s it sits in your pack. For those who don't know, the film canister is just another layer of hard-sided protection for the stove to prevent it from being bent./crushed in the event of major fall, etc. It is actually almost smaller than the mini Bic lighter I use to light it (this stove does not have its own ignition, btw).
The metal arms do seem flimsy when not locked, but haven't had any problem with it holding my 900mL pot with 0.5L of water boiling in it. Obviously, just keep to semi-flat surfaces.
For as small as the stove is, it packs one hell of a punch. At full throttle, the stove boils water in less than 2 mins (water was below 50 degree F at start). I haven't done any testing myself other than what I've noted in the field, but there are YouTube videos to guide how much fuel consumption and time it takes. One thing I will say though, is that this stove is LOUD. Even at the lower output, I would not light this thing up if you are within 100 yards of something you are hunting. It sounds like a small jet engine, which is where I assume it gets its water boiling efficiency from. It is not the most wind resistant stove I have ever used, but definitely not the worst. Wind was blowing approx. 8 mph and it did not struggle to stay lit, but did affect the heating ability quite substantially. So finding a spot with a little bit of cover from the wind is advisable.
All-in-all a great little entry level stove. Happy trials and full freezers everyone!
I pair it with my Boundless voyage pot set. It has no ignition but most people carry a lighter or spark so it shouldn't be a problem for most. It's susceptible to wind, but a piece of foil will fix that.
My pot carries a lighter, stove, hanging kit, and foil with ample room to spare.
Never had any trouble with it and would recommend it to anyone out of the gate for getting starting with backpacking due to its affordability and reliability.
To protect it, I put it in an old perscription pill bottle. The little pouch it comes with is the perfect padding to keep it from rattling around..
Stats from the product label:
Cumbustion power: 1940-2700W
3 minutes to boil 1 L water (I think we can assume room temperature water under zero wind conditions)
Gas consumption 140g/h (on high? on low?)
Bottom line this little stove is hard to beat for price and weight. I feel bad for other stove manufacturers.
For low altitude, low-wind conditions, it's all you need. You will need a windscreen in any decent breeze but if you use one, don't totally surround the stove and cannister when using this type of stove (cannister may overheat and explode).
COMPARISONS
-The MSR pocket Rocket Deluxe is superior in windy conditions for a little more weight & money.
-The Jet Boil's lightest model is faster and can be used as a hanging stove.
-The Primus Express Spider is a better cannister stove for winter use because you can invert the cannister and get the last bit of cold fuel out of it.
-The Caldera Cone Alcohol stove is a lighter total system and doesn't use cannisters.
-The venerable MSR XGK is the ultimate high altitude/winter use/international stove for melting lots of snow quickly and is lighter than MSR's "whisperlight international", for those who can deal with white gas.
But for casual camping or backpackers who count ounces and make their windscreens out of aluminum foil, this is it.
